Installation of Secondary Staircase
Description
Installation of Secondary Staircase
As part of Transport for London’s (TfL) ongoing commitment to improving passenger experience and enhancing safety, Blackwall DLR Station required the installation of a secondary staircase. This project was initiated to increase the station’s access and egress capacity, reducing congestion, ensuring safer evacuation in emergencies, and accommodating future passenger growth.
To achieve this, our team was engaged to provide a comprehensive range of essential services, ensuring that the staircase installation met modern standards for functionality, safety, and accessibility.
Our role in this project was to deliver key electrical, communication, and safety infrastructure to support the new secondary staircase installation. The following services were provided:
Containment
Installation of a new containment system to house all necessary cabling for the new electrical, lighting, and communications infrastructure. This system was integrated into the existing station layout, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations while maintaining a high level of safety and aesthetics.
Electrical Power and Lighting
Installation of new lighting systems for the staircase to ensure adequate illumination at all times, in line with London Underground safety standards. New electrical power systems to supply the additional load required by the new lighting, CCTV, Public Address/Voice Alarm (PAVA), and other systems associated with the staircase installation. Compliance with regulatory standards for emergency lighting, including backup power systems to ensure continuous illumination during power outages.
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)
Expansion of the station’s CCTV coverage to include the new staircase, ensuring continuous surveillance for enhanced passenger safety. Installation of high-definition cameras strategically placed to monitor all areas of the new access point. Integration of the CCTV feeds into the station’s central security system, allowing station staff to monitor live footage from the new cameras.
Public Address and Voice Alarm (PAVA)
Installation of PAVA speakers in and around the new staircase to ensure clear communication with passengers in the event of an emergency. Integration of the PAVA system with the station’s existing public announcement system, enabling consistent messaging and alarms throughout the station. Testing of the system to ensure that all announcements and alarms are clearly audible across the entire staircase area.
Automatic Passenger Counters (APC)
Installation of Automatic Passenger Counters at the new staircase entry and exit points to provide real-time data on passenger flow. Integration of the APC system with the station’s monitoring network to help station management optimise staffing, safety protocols, and operational efficiency. Use of the data from APC to monitor and control crowding, especially during peak times or emergency situations.
Customer Information System (CIS)
Expansion of the Customer Information System to include the new staircase area, ensuring passengers can access real-time updates regarding train services, delays, and station announcements. Installation of new digital display screens and speakers along the staircase route to provide passengers with essential travel information and emergency messages. Full integration of CIS with the station’s central communication system to ensure real-time updates and synchronisation across the entire station.
